Christmas is a fantastic time of year to settle down with the family and play games from dawn till dusk! On the special day itself – once the presents have been opened and all the food is gobbled up – making your own entertainment is a great way to bring everyone together and take a break from the endless loop of Christmas movies playing on the TV.
So to get you in the festive party spirit, here’s 5 fun family games for you to try this Christmas:
Family Tree
Minimum of 4 people
The idea of this game is to decorate two members of your family as a Christmas tree! Divide yourselves into two teams and choose one person to be the model for the other(s) to decorate. Gather up some materials such as red and green crepe paper, foil, left over wrapping paper and bows and set the clock for 2 minutes. Within this time you need to decorate your tree as quickly and beautifully as possible. The winning team is the one with the most decorated – and convincing – Christmas tree!
Present Scramble
You’ll need to prepare for this game well in advance. Wrap up a small gift and pop it in a box. Then wrap that box in a larger box, and repeat this process as many times as you can. When it comes to playing Present Scramble, gather your family round in a circle with the wrapped gift in the middle, and have them take turns rolling a dice.
The first person to roll a 6 can start unwrapping – but the catch is, they need to put on a pair of oven mitts to do so! The remaining players continue rolling the dice while other is unwrapping – until someone else rolls the chosen number and now they must put on the mitts and attempt to unwrap the present. The person who unwraps the gift at the end gets to keep it.
Christmas Trivia
How much do your really know about Christmas? A game of Christmas Trivia will challenge the whole family’s festive knowledge and you can choose specific themes, such as Santa Trivia, Christmas Traditions from Around the World, or Christmas Movies to mix it up a bit. You’ll have to do a little bit of research to come up with some great questions, but we have some examples below to get you started:
Santa Trivia:
Q: Can you name all of Santa’s Reindeers?
A: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen and Rudolph.
Q: Where did the real St. Nicholas come from?
A: Turkey! – He served as a Bishop in the town of Myra in the 4th century.
General Christmas Trivia:
Q: What Christmas-related item did the founders of Hallmark invent?
A: Gift wrap – The Hall brothers ran out of tissue paper so they wrapped their gifts in fancy paper instead!
Q: What does a Christmas tree symbolise?
A: Everlasting life and things to come in springtime.
Once you’ve decided on the Christmas trivia questions you want to play with, get a pack of small paper cards and write the question and answer for each on separate bits of card. When it comes to playing, hand the pack to the question master to begin the quiz and keep a tally of the scores. Christmas Trivia game is great for playing at the table after dinner.
Christmas Memory Game
Test everyone’s memory with this festive-themed memory game!
You’ll need:
- A tray
- A collection of small random Christmas objects (e.g. bauble, stocking, candy cane, bells, wrapped up chocolate, candle, holly, stars etc).
- A cloth to cover the tray
- Paper and pens for everyone
Before you start, lay out all the objects on the tray and cover it up. Hand out paper and pens to the players. Now reveal all the contents on the tray and let everyone look at them for 60 seconds. Then cover up the tray and let everyone know when they can start writing – they need to jot down as many items as possible from their memory. Whoever gets the most correct wins the game!
Pin the Nose on Rudolph
A festive take on Pin the Tail on the Donkey, this game is great for the kids! You’ll need to either draw or print out a big picture of Rudolph the reindeer (preferably on an A3 sheet of paper) and then hang it up on the wall.
Next, get a red small red pompom ball and attach to it a little piece of double-sided sticky tape. Blindfold the first player, give them the pompom ball and guide them to the picture of Rudolph so they can have a go at pinning on his nose. Whoever pins the nose the closest wins!
