In 2015, 7 in 10 of the UK’s 5- to 15-year-olds had access to tablet computers, with 34% owning their own. In 2016 that figure has increased. Technology is having an impact on our lives from a younger and younger age and Christmas is a time when screen time increases.
But Christmas is also a time for fun away from the iPad and TV screens. During the Christmas holidays there are plenty of festive activities that don’t involve sitting around watching cat videos for the thousandth time.
Cooking and Baking
Mince pies. Gingerbread. Trifle. Christmas dinner. Christmas is the season to be baking and cooking. So why not get some Santa’s little helpers of your own and get the kids involved? Kids love to make things – especially when there are tasty things to lick off of spoons. Take some time this Christmas to teach your kids how to bake something or learn a basic cooking technique.
Make Stuff
Go that extra mile when it comes to your decorations this year. Deliver the personal touch with some homemade Christmas cards, decorations and presents.
Pop to the craft shop and grab some glitter, some glue and some craft paper and bring some homemade charm to your Christmas tree.
Why not make some festive sock snowmen?
Get Outdoors
Just because it’s cold, doesn’t mean you have to stay inside. If, by some miracle, we get some snow, start building real snowmen! Either way, there are plenty of winter activities to enjoy at Christmas, like ice skating, choosing this year’s Christmas tree and taking winter nature walks. Make a bird feeder for your hungry flying friends in the garden, or simply go carol singing.
You can also sample all the food and fun of a Christmas market. If you have younger children to entertain, take them to visit the magic of Santa’s Grotto.
Dance Off!
Christmas is a time for dance-tastic music. Fire up your Christmas tunes and challenge your kids to a dancing competition with Christmas treats as a prize.
There’s so much fun to be had during the Christmas holidays – all you need is a little inspiration. How are you keeping your kids active this year? Let us know on our Facebook page.
