If you’re reading this, it’s very likely you have kids who absolutely loathe the idea of eating fruits and vegetables. Unfortunately, despite their nutritional goodness, veggies are all too often pushed aside in favour of cake, and it can be an ongoing battle for parents, like yourself, to encourage kids to try new foods and eat healthy.
Here at V8 we are big advocates of eating plenty of fruit and veg, and we want to help you to get your kids to enjoy more of the good stuff. Below we have six great tips that will get your kids to eat the rainbow – with very little fuss – in no time at all!
1) Frozen Fruits
A great way to encourage your kids to eat their fruits is to turn them into sweet treats. Freeze some bananas, grapes and berries in plastic sealable bags which you can take out on a whim when your kids ask for something sweet. Alternatively, blend frozen fruits with cocoa powder to create a healthier version of ice cream.
2) The Joy of Juice
Many kids will much prefer drinking their fruit and vegetables rather than eating them. Our V8 juices are packed-full of five-a-day goodness and are a fantastic way to ensure your kids are getting a good dose of fruit and vegetables without the hassle. Alternatively, you can use our V8 juices in everyday meals to enhance flavour. Check out our recipe section to find out more.
3) Veggie Pasta
Courgetti is hugely popular among health enthusiasts, and is a sure-fire way to incorporate more vegetables into your family meals. Although courgettes are one of the most nutritious vegetables you can eat, they are not particularly appealing once cooked, so making them into stringy pasta is guaranteed to up their desirability in the eyes of children. Take a look at our Lentil Bolognese with Courgetti recipe for inspiration.
4) Make Fruit and Veggies Fun
Often it’s the visual appearance of fruit and vegetables that makes kids wary of eating them. Turning chopped up fruit and veg into faces and creatures, and calling them different names (such as ‘trees’ instead of broccoli) can put the fun back into eating and make healthy foods seem less unappealing and intimidating.
5) Baked Goodness
Baking with fruit and vegetables as key ingredients is a fantastic way to turn a sweet treat into one of your kids’ five a day. Veggies such as courgettes, beetroot and carrots are popular choices for baked goods, while berries, dried apricots and bananas can be easily incorporated into bread, muffins and pancake recipes. Take a look at our delicious Passion Fruit, Mango & Carrot Juice Cake recipe for tips.
6) Reward Charts
Five-a-day charts such as our special Fruit & Veg Reward Chart can make eating healthy more enjoyable for kids, which overtime can help to change their attitudes towards certain foods. Giving them a sticker to pin on the chart whenever they have a serving of fruit or veg will help to boost their confidence in eating a varied diet – especially as they start to see progress.
